Diatomite filter aid is used extensively both in mechanical engineering (recycling of cutting oil used in the manufacture of metal parts) and in chemical manufacture (lubricant additives, etc.); it is also used as support for hydrogenation catalysts.

With its high porosity and crystalline structure (or its low compressibility), diatomaceous earth is used highly successfully in liquid – solid separation.
